Friends who met Nafisa Joseph recently recall how excited she was about her marriage plans which didn't work out.

Not surprisingly, the city’s glamour set is in a state of shock. Fashion designer Manoviraj Khosla was working on the wardrobe for her fiancé Gautam Khanduja when he heard about her. Since then, his phone hasn’t stopped ringing.

After modelling for a couple of years, the former Miss India took a break, and joined again when she was 16. Bidapa, godfather to Bangalore’s fashion aspirants, was instrumental in grooming Joseph for the beauty contest. </span><br /><br /><span style="" font-family:="" arial="" font-size:="">"Nafisa was very bright. She had a dream life, a dream career. She had a strong presence. Now, all that has gone down the drain. If I had any inkling about her problem, I would have been helpful," Bidapa says, sounding shaken over the phone. </span><br /><br /><span style="" font-family:="" arial="" font-size:="">Bidapa says Joseph would call him up if she was ever depressed. "Everyone is depressed once in a while. She did have a couple of relationships earlier which didn’t work out. But it’s completely beyond me that someone like her would have ended her life over one relationship." </span><br /><br /><span style="" font-family:="" arial="" font-size:="">Bidapa recounts how Joseph had sounded excited about her marriage when they last spoke over the phone about two weeks back. </span><br /><br /><span style="" font-family:="" arial="" font-size:="">Former Miss India Manpreet Brar Walia, who did fashion shows with Joseph some years ago, remembers her as a "very balanced, level-headed person."</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-family:="" arial="" font-size:="">Walia’s career graph followed a similar pattern – winning the Miss India crown, modelling and hosting shows. Asked if being a celebrity takes an extra toll on one’s emotional well-being, Walia says, "This is an isolated case. It would be wrong to generalise."</span></div> </div>
